Abstract

Bodies change, memories fade, and personal stories are revised, yet people usually experience themselves as continuing through time. This paper compares biological, psychological, and narrative explanations of that continuity. It asks what each explanation treats as essential and what evidence could support or challenge it. The proposed tests form a personal research map instead of reporting completed validation.

Introduction

This is independent personal research, undertaken autonomously and without organizational sponsorship. It draws only on public sources, personal reasoning, and bounded experiments where useful; it contains no confidential material. The ideas are provisional and may change as evidence improves.

The everyday question is what allows a person to remain the same person while the body, memories, relationships, and self-story change. I compare biological, psychological, and narrative answers and ask what evidence could support or challenge each one. The paper offers a personal research map instead of a final theory of identity.

Problem and research question

Research background

Identity is a concept that asks, “What makes an individual the same person over time?” (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Historically, answers have ranged from immortal souls to psychological memories, but not all propositions are scientifically testable (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy) (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

In this interdisciplinary inquiry, we examine three falsifiable models of personal identity – each grounded in a distinct theoretical tradition (biological, psychological, and constructivist) – and articulate how each model defines identity, what factors it deems essential, and how it can be empirically measured or computationally simulated. For each model, we outline its formal definition and theoretical foundation, key variables and constructs, methods for measurement, and testable hypotheses or experiments. We also discuss contexts where each model excels or fails and the philosophical assumptions (e.g. reductionist vs. constructivist) underlying each. We then compare the models on explanatory power, falsifiability, empirical tractability, and relevance to disciplines ranging from psychology and philosophy to computer science and engineering.

By mapping these models side by side, we aim to illuminate how different frameworks “slice” the identity problem and to foster a more integrative understanding of what identity is – and isn’t.

Model 1: Biological Continuity Model of Identity

Definition and Theoretical Foundation: The biological continuity model (also known as the somatic or animalist model) posits that personal identity is fundamentally grounded in the continuity of one’s living physical organism.

In philosophical terms, “each of us is an organism of the species Homo sapiens and the conditions of our persistence are those of animals” ( Animalism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) ). In other words, you remain you so long as your biological body (or, more precisely, your brain) continues to exist and function in an unbroken sequence (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

This view has roots in Aristotle’s notion of the soul as form of the body and finds contemporary expression in animalism, championed by philosophers like Eric Olson. It starkly contrasts with theories that locate identity in consciousness or soul, instead asserting that we are our bodies. As a result, any change that preserves the same living organism (e.g. continuous life processes in the same body or brain) preserves identity, whereas destruction of the organism (death or irreversible cessation of brain function) ends the identity of the person (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

This model provides a concrete, material criterion for identity over time: the physical continuity of the biological self.

Biological model: Key Constructs and Variables

  • Organic Continuity: The unbroken existence of the living body or brain. This is the core variable – as long as the organism’s life persists, identity persists ( Animalism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) ).

  • Brain Preservation: Some versions emphasize the brain as the locus of identity. The intact brain (or an integrated central nervous system) is considered the necessary organ for personal identity, since it underlies mental capacities.

  • Genetic and Physiological Markers: DNA is often unique to an individual and could serve as an identity marker (except in identical twins), though the model emphasizes ongoing life instead of static DNA. Other physiological indicators (biometrics like fingerprints or neural patterns) are proxies for the organism’s continuity.

  • Continuity of Biochemical Processes: The ongoing metabolic and homeostatic processes that keep a body alive are implicitly part of this continuity. Disruption (e.g. irreversible cessation of heartbeat and brain activity) marks the end of the person’s existence in this view.

Measurement Approaches: Biological identity can be measured or verified through physical and physiological criteria. For instance, identity authentication in legal or forensic contexts often assumes a biological model: one uses fingerprints, retinal scans, or DNA to identify a person as the same individual over time. Uniquely, neuroscience now provides a way to “fingerprint” individuals by their brain patterns. Recent studies show that a person’s brain connectivity profile is as distinctive as a fingerprint – functional connectivity profiles act as a “fingerprint” that can accurately identify individuals across different scans ( Functional connectome fingerprinting: Identifying individuals based on patterns of brain connectivity - PMC ). Such findings reinforce the idea that the physical brain carries the unique signature of identity. In practice, continuity of identity might be assessed by tracking an individual’s biometrics or even by brain imaging: if a post-incident brain scan can be matched to a pre-incident scan of the same person, the biological model would argue it’s the same identity continuing. Computationally, one could simulate this by tracking a digital avatar’s “body” state – for example, an artificial life simulation where an agent’s identity is tied to a continuous data structure representing its body or brain state. Any major break (deletion or corruption of that structure) would constitute identity death in the simulation, aligning with the biological model.

Model 2: Psychological Continuity Model of Identity

Definition and Theoretical Foundation: The psychological continuity model defines identity through the persistence of an individual’s psychological characteristics – memories, consciousness, personality, and other mental connections – over time. Formulated classically by John Locke in the 17th century, this view holds that “personal identity is a matter of psychological continuity”, grounded in a connected stream of consciousness ( John Locke on Personal Identity** - PMC ) ( John Locke on Personal Identity** - PMC ). Locke argued that it is memory and awareness of past experiences that make you the same person today as years ago, “not on the substance of either the soul or the body” ( John Locke on Personal Identity** - PMC ) ( John Locke on Personal Identity** - PMC ). In this Lockean tradition, as long as one’s mind maintains connected memories, intentions, beliefs, and other psychological links from moment to moment, the identity persists (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Later philosophers and cognitive scientists expanded this theory: Derek Parfit, for example, spoke of identity in terms of overlapping chains of psychological connections – one is the same person over time by virtue of having connected memories, personality traits, and intentions, even if these evolve (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This model shifts the essence of identity from the body to the mind, suggesting that who we are is essentially the continuity of our inner life. It addresses the “diachronic” problem of personal identity by positing that Person Y at a later time is the same as Person X now if Y has enough of X’s psychology (memories, character, etc.), perhaps via direct or indirect links, to be considered continuous (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This model implies that if one’s mental continuity is broken – say by total amnesia – then in a real sense the original identity has ceased or at least been radically interrupted.

Psychological model: Key Constructs and Variables

  • Memory Continuity: Overlapping autobiographical memories form the backbone of identity in this model. The ability to recall or at least have present mental states that causally stem from past experiences is a primary variable (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). For example, your memory of graduating links your present self to your student self. Even if you don’t recall an event directly, a chain of memories (A remembers B, B remembers C, etc.) can connect you to your childhood – a notion known as the transitivity of psychological connection.

  • Personality and Disposition: Traits, values, and temperament that persist over time. If someone’s fundamental personality traits (extraversion, conscientiousness, etc.) remain largely continuous from age 20 to 40, this continuity supports identity. Sudden or complete personality change (e.g. due to brain injury or dementia) would indicate an identity discontinuity in this view.

  • Beliefs, Intentions, and Values: The persistence of core beliefs or life goals also constitutes psychological sameness. For instance, if an individual wakes up with no memory and entirely different preferences, the psychological model would treat them as a different person (even if biologically the same).

  • Self-Concept and Narrative: A more specific psychological construct is the self-concept – one’s understanding of who one is. While the narrative aspect will be more central in Model 3, even in the psychological continuity model the sense of self (continuity of ego) is key. Variables like self-continuity (the subjective belief that you are the same person over time) come into play. These can be measured by asking people how connected they feel to their past or future self.

  • Consciousness (Stream of Consciousness): Some theories (e.g. by philosophers like Thomas Reid or Edmund Husserl) emphasize an unbroken stream of consciousness. If consciousness ceases and restarts (as in dreamless sleep or anesthesia), is it the same self upon restarting? Typically, we assume yes if memory bridges the gap (you remember who you are after waking). Thus, continuity of consciousness typically piggybacks on memory and cognitive function continuity.

Measurement Approaches: Psychological continuity can be assessed through cognitive and behavioral evidence of continuous character. In practice, neuropsychology and cognitive psychology provide tools: memory tests, personality inventories, and self-report measures of identity continuity. A straightforward measure is autobiographical memory: psychologists might use the Autobiographical Memory Interview or similar tests to see how well a person can recall life events. Cases of amnesia provide natural experiments – for example, patients with severe retrograde amnesia often lose their sense of identity because they cannot recall their own past. Indeed, clinical observations note that impairment of episodic memory is associated with impairment of self-identity (Psychogenic amnesia and self-identity: a multimodal functional investigation - PubMed). Another measure is consistency of personality traits: longitudinal studies track individuals over years with personality questionnaires; a high correlation of trait scores over time indicates continuity. From a computational angle, one might model psychological continuity by creating a knowledge graph or state representation of an agent’s mind and see if key nodes (memories, goals) remain connected over time steps. In AI research, this is analogous to maintaining a stable state vector for an agent. If that vector is disrupted or randomized (akin to wiping memory), the agent’s “identity” from the psychological viewpoint would be considered broken. Also, brain imaging can indirectly measure psychological continuity: patterns of brain activity when recalling self-relevant memories versus non-self information reveal if the person accesses a continuous self-schema. For example, fMRI studies show certain networks (like the hippocampus and default mode network) activate during self-memory retrieval; disruptions there correlate with loss of autobiographical continuity (as in Alzheimer’s disease). So, one could measure identity continuity by looking at the integrity of these networks. On the behavioral side, consistency in life narrative is measurable by coding life story interviews for coherence – if a person can coherently connect their life episodes, it evidences psychological continuity (this overlaps with narrative identity measurement). Finally, even legal/ethical assessments sometimes implicitly use psychological measures: for instance, in determining if someone is responsible for past actions, courts consider if the person’s mental state is continuous (e.g. did a mental illness so alter them that “they are not the same person” who committed the crime? Such arguments, while rare, invoke psychological identity).

Model 3: Narrative and Sociocultural Constructivist Model of Identity

Definition and Theoretical Foundation: The narrative/constructivist model sees identity not as a fixed essence carried in body or memory, but as an ongoing construction – a story – shaped by oneself and one’s social context. This model is grounded in both psychological and sociological theory. Psychologist Dan McAdams, for instance, conceives of identity as a “personal narrative that provides a person with unity and purpose”, an internalized life story that evolves over time ((PDF) Narrative Identity). In McAdams’ framework, identity is the third level of personality – the integrative life story one crafts that explains how one came to be and where one is going ((PDF) Narrative Identity). Meanwhile, social constructionists and symbolic interactionists (like G.H. Mead or Charles Cooley) emphasize that our identity is fundamentally formed through social interaction, cultural norms, and roles. From this perspective, there isn’t a “true core” to be discovered; instead, identity is enacted and negotiated in context – for example, you develop a sense of self by adopting societal roles (student, parent, engineer) and through reflecting how others see you (the “looking-glass self”). We combine the narrative and sociocultural views here because both stress that identity is something constructed (by stories or by society) instead of inherent. A formal definition in this model might be: Identity is a dynamic narrative or set of meanings that an individual creates (in concert with societal influences) to make sense of themselves, and which can change with new experiences or contexts. It is falsifiable in that it leads to predictions about how changes in narrative or social environment will change identity. This model assumes multiple influences: psychological (cognitive abilities to create narrative), social (cultural scripts and feedback), and linguistic (since narrative is communicated in language). It often implies that identity is not unitary or static – one can have multiple facets or even multiple selves in different contexts, held together by a narrative thread. Importantly, identity here is less about persistence over time in a vacuum and more about meaning-making: it answers “Who am I?” by constructing a story, and this process itself ensures a sense of continuity even as life changes.

Narrative model: Key Constructs and Variables

  • Life Story Narrative: The content of one’s internalized story – key chapters (e.g. “overcoming a tough childhood”), major characters (family, friends), themes (such as redemption, achievement, or trauma), and the plot that connects past, present, and future. Researchers like McAdams measure elements like narrative coherence (does the story make sense?), openness, and themes of agency or communion. These narrative features are variables that differ between individuals and correlate with outcomes (e.g. a coherent, positive narrative is linked to well-being ((PDF) Narrative Identity)).

  • Social Roles and Identities: Identities such as gender, ethnicity, profession, or group membership are central building blocks in this model. Social Identity Theory in psychology shows that group memberships (nationality, religion, team affiliation, etc.) become part of one’s self-concept: “Group membership helps people to define who they are and how they relate to others” (Social identity theory | Definition, History, Examples, & Facts | Britannica). Thus, the extent of one’s identification with a group (say, how strongly one feels “I am a psychologist” or “I am a mother”) is a key variable. These can be measured with identity salience scales or by behavioral indicators of identification.

  • Reflected Appraisals: This concept (from symbolic interactionism) captures how we incorporate others’ views of us into our identity. For example, if everyone treats Alice as the “brainy one,” Alice may internalize that into her narrative (“I’m a smart person who loves learning”). A variable here is the degree of consistency or positivity in the feedback one receives from important others. Experiments might assess how self-concept changes when social feedback changes.

  • Cultural Narratives and Scripts: The broader society provides templates (cultural narratives) for what a life story should look like (e.g. a “rags to riches” story, or a religious conversion narrative). The model considers what cultural script an individual might be following. For instance, an American might have an “individualistic success” narrative, whereas someone from a collectivist culture might define identity more through family and community roles. Variables include the type of narrative (redemption, contamination, quest, etc.) and its origin (is it drawn from religion, pop culture, national history?).

  • Identity Dynamics (Multiple Selves): The model allows that one person can have multiple sub-identities or self-aspects (professional self vs. family self, for example). The concept of self-complexity measures how many distinct facets a person’s identity has and how integrated they are. A highly complex identity might have many roles and stories; a simpler identity might revolve around one theme. Too much fragmentation (no integration) might lead to confusion, while some diversity can be healthy.

  • Continuity as Narrative Coherence: Instead of continuity of body or memory, here continuity is about making a coherent story out of life’s changes. A variable is how one bridges changes: e.g., if someone immigrates to a new country, do they weave their past identity with their new identity in a story (“I have reinvented myself but also carry my heritage”)? The success of that integration is a measurable outcome (through narrative analysis).

Measurement Approaches: This model often relies on qualitative data turned into quantitative metrics. A primary method is the narrative interview: researchers ask individuals to tell their life story or specific formative life events, then code the narratives for structural and thematic features. For example, McAdams’ Life Story Interview yields transcripts that are analyzed for coherence (does the story flow logically with a beginning, middle, end), openness (does it acknowledge change and complexity), and themes like redemption (bad events turning good) or contamination (good turning bad). These indicators measure how identity is being constructed. Such narrative measures have predictive validity (e.g., finding redemptive themes in a story is associated with higher life satisfaction) ((PDF) Narrative Identity). On the social side, psychometric scales exist for social identity: the “Identification with a Psychological Group” scale or similar surveys ask people to rate how much they feel connected to and defined by their groups. Role identity questionnaires ask people to describe themselves in various roles and rate importance. In experiments, social psychologists might manipulate context to measure identity shifts – for instance, reminding someone of their ethnicity or gender before a task (as in stereotype threat studies) and seeing how it affects performance and self-concept. Even neuroscience has been used: thinking about one’s own traits versus others’ traits activates certain brain regions (medial prefrontal cortex for self-related processing), and differences in activation might correlate with how strongly one’s identity is tied to certain traits or group memberships. Computational approaches are emerging too. For example, natural language processing can analyze large text data (like personal blog posts or social media) to detect an individual’s prevailing narrative or identity claims. One could computationally model identity as a knowledge network: nodes for roles and traits, which get activated in different contexts. Measuring how the network configuration changes from context to context could quantify identity complexity and stability. Social network analysis also plays a role: one’s pattern of relationships can reveal facets of identity (e.g., an email network might show distinct clusters corresponding to one’s professional vs. personal identity networks). In sum, measurement in this model spans from thematic coding of stories, surveys of identification and self-concept, observational studies of behavior in different social contexts, to even tracking digital footprints to infer identity expressions.

Competing positions

Comparative Analysis of the Three Models

Having detailed each model, we now compare them across several dimensions to evaluate their explanatory power and scientific tractability, as well as their relevance to different disciplines:

  • Core Criterion of Identity: The biological model’s core criterion is physical/organismic continuity – easily observable and binary (alive or not, same body or not). The psychological model’s criterion is continuity of consciousness and memory, which is more abstract and admits degrees (one can have partial continuity). The narrative/sociocultural model uses continuity of a story or social persona, which is the most fluid criterion – it’s qualitative and can’t be pinned down to a single metric. This means the biological model gives the clearest rule for persistence (but perhaps too rigid), the psychological model gives a conditional rule (but faces edge cases like duplication), and the narrative model gives a flexible rule (but one that’s harder to formally define). Each criterion highlights different aspects of what “sameness” means: for biologists and engineers, sameness might mean the same material system; for psychologists, the same mind pattern; for social scientists, the same role or narrative.

  • Explanatory Power: In terms of explaining what phenomena each model accounts for, each has strengths. The biological model has high explanatory power for phenomena like brain injury effects on personality (it predicts change only when the physical substrate is damaged – which aligns with cases like Gage) and for legal identity (it explains why a corpse is no longer a person in straightforward terms). However, it fails to explain phenomena like subjective selfhood or why a person cares about memories – it doesn’t address consciousness or experience. The psychological model has strong explanatory power for our intuitions about self: it explains amnesia-related identity loss, dissociations, and why gradual change feels like continuity. It shines in explaining moral and personal importance of identity (why we fear memory loss or brainwashing as “losing oneself”). Yet it struggles explaining unique identity in cases of duplication (it can explain the person’s perspective but not resolve who is who if two identical psyches exist) – so its explanatory power in thought experiments is weaker unless one accepts counterintuitive conclusions. The narrative/sociocultural model offers explanations for identity changes across contexts and over the lifespan. It explains why people in different cultures have different conceptions of self, and how life events can redefine someone. It uniquely accounts for the role of language, society, and meaning in identity – areas the other models mostly ignore. Its weakness is that it can verge into tautology (the identity is what the narrative says it is) and may not explain the deep metaphysical persistence question clearly (since a story can change entirely yet we might still consider the person numerically identical). In short, the biological model explains identity in biomedical and empirical terms well, the psychological model in cognitive and moral terms, and the narrative model in social and developmental terms. Each has high explanatory power within its domain, and low power outside it. Together, however, they complement each other – e.g., a complete explanation of a case like dementia might involve biological (neural degeneration), psychological (loss of memory continuity), and narrative (disintegration of life story) elements.

  • Falsifiability and Testability: The three models were chosen because each can generate a revision condition, but they differ in empirical tractability. The biological model predicts that identity-relevant psychological change depends on a physical substrate; evidence of identity change without a corresponding biological mechanism would count against a strong version. The psychological model predicts that memory and other continuity-bearing processes affect experienced identity, while amnesia and branching cases expose ambiguity instead of a settled verdict. The narrative model predicts that narrative and social-context interventions affect self-description or behavior, but it risks circularity unless identity outcomes are defined independently of the narrative used to explain them. The cited studies motivate tests; they do not establish that any model is sufficient or universally true.

  • Empirical Tractability: This refers to how easy it is to gather data and apply the model. The biological model is tractable with modern science: one can measure brain states, genetics, biometrics with precision. It reduces identity to things we can often quantify (neuronal patterns, etc.). For engineers, this model is attractive because identity verification systems (fingerprints, retina scans) effectively operationalize “same body = same person,” working well in practice. The downside is that it doesn’t capture the subjective aspects, but from a purely empirical standpoint, it’s straightforward: if the body is the same, we tick the box for identity. The psychological model is moderately tractable: psychological states can be measured, but not as directly as physical ones. We rely on self-report (which can be biased) or memory tests (which only approximate continuity). Longitudinal studies to assess identity continuity are effortful but feasible. Cognitive neuroscience can track whether the same neural activation patterns appear when a person thinks of themselves at different times, providing empirical proxies for continuity of self-representation. The model is tractable enough that it’s the de facto approach in cognitive science when studying the “sense of self” – experiments on self-recognition, memory, etc., all operationalize identity as psychological continuity. The narrative/sociocultural model is less tractable in the sense of quantification: it deals with qualitative data (stories, social context) and multifactorial influences. However, researchers have developed coding schemes and scales, making it more empirical than it first sounds. There is more room for interpretation error (e.g., two coders might differ on what constitutes a “redemptive theme” in a story), but with training and multiple coders one gets reliable data. Sociocultural factors also introduce many confounds – measuring culture’s effect on identity requires careful cross-cultural studies. Despite these challenges, fields like cross-cultural psychology and narrative psychology have produced well-replicated findings, so it’s tractable with the right methodologies (mixed methods, longitudinal designs). It’s perhaps less accessible for computer modeling, although even that is changing (e.g., some AI research tries to simulate evolving agent identities in social environments). In interdisciplinary work, biological measures are often considered more “hard data,” psychological in between, and narrative/social as “soft data.” But each model encourages different methods: laboratory experiments for biological and psychological factors, and interviews or field studies for narrative/social factors. An integrative empirical approach might use all: e.g., a study on identity in Alzheimer’s could use brain scans (biological continuity of brain structure), memory questionnaires (psychological continuity), and interviews with patients/caregivers (narrative identity changes) – giving a full picture.

  • Interdisciplinary Relevance:

    • To Philosophy: All three models originate in philosophical debates. Biological continuity ties to metaphysics of materialism and personal identity criteria (discussed by philosophers like Olson and Parfit), psychological continuity comes straight from Locke and has been central in philosophy of mind discussions, and narrative identity has been explored by philosophers like MacIntyre, Ricoeur, and Schechtman. For philosophy, the biological model raises questions about the soul and mind-body problem (it sides with physicalism), the psychological model raises classic puzzles (like fission, the Ship of Theseus but for minds), and the narrative model connects to existential and hermeneutic philosophy about meaning. Each model thus informs different branches: the first is relevant to philosophy of mind and metaphysics (what are we, essentially? an animal, a mind, or a story?), the second to ethics and metaphysics (what matters in survival, is identity what matters or just psychological continuity as Parfit says (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy) (Personal Identity | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy)?), the third to continental philosophy and social theory (how identity is constituted by narrative and society).

    • To Psychology: The biological model is relevant to neuropsychology and developmental psychology (e.g., the role of brain maturation in identity formation). The psychological model is essentially a psychological theory – it directly informs research on memory, self-concept, and personality continuity. The narrative model is heavily used in personality and developmental psychology (study of life stories in adult development, identity formation in adolescence as per Erikson’s theory that adolescence is about developing a coherent identity (Narrative identity - Wikipedia) (Narrative identity - Wikipedia)). Social psychology also leans on the narrative/constructivist model via social identity theory and self-categorization theory. In clinical psychology, narrative identity is used to treat trauma, and questions of identity are central in disorders (DID, BPD’s identity disturbance, etc., where narrative and continuity are both disrupted ( On identity: from a philosophical point of view - PMC )). So each model maps to subfields: biological to neuropsychology, psychological continuity to cognitive and clinical psychology, and narrative/social to personality, social, and cultural psychology.

    • To Computer Science and Engineering: The relevance might seem less obvious, but it’s there. In AI and robotics, the question “does the robot have a self-model or identity?” touches on psychological continuity – for instance, a long-term learning AI that updates its knowledge base essentially has to maintain a form of continuity (otherwise it’s not the “same agent” continuing a task). Engineers designing digital identity systems (for cybersecurity or federated identity across platforms) work mostly with a simplified version of the biological model: they assume a single entity with continuous credentials. But as digital life grows, the narrative model becomes relevant: online identities are crafted stories (social media profiles), and understanding user identity across platforms may require narrative analysis (e.g., analyzing a user’s posts to verify it’s the same person behind two accounts). The biological model, rooted in reductionist physicalism, provides clear criteria (same organism = same person) and is easily aligned with empirical tests in neuroscience and medicine, but it neglects the inner experience of identity. The psychological model places the self in mind and memory, capturing the importance of conscious continuity and providing rich explanatory power for moral and personal phenomena; it is less tangible to measure but finds support in psychology and cognitive neuroscience, even as it grapples with thought-experiment challenges (like one mind in two bodies). The narrative and sociocultural model broadens the scope, viewing identity as a dynamic story co-created with one’s environment – it highlights the role of culture, relationships, and personal meaning in shaping who we are. This model, while harder to pin down with a single quantitative measure, has strong relevance for understanding identity development, social behavior, and the fluidity of self-concept across contexts.

In comparing the three, we find no one model fully eclipses the others; instead, each addresses different dimensions of the identity puzzle. In terms of explanatory breadth, the biological model excels in concrete continuity (life vs. death), the psychological in phenomenological continuity (self-awareness and memory), and the narrative in contextual and longitudinal continuity (life history and social definition). Regarding falsifiability, all three yield testable hypotheses: the biological with predictions about the primacy of the body/brain, the psychological with predictions about memory and personality continuity, and the narrative with predictions about the malleability of identity through stories and social influence. Each model has been buttressed by empirical findings – from brain “fingerprints” identifying individuals ( Functional connectome fingerprinting: Identifying individuals based on patterns of brain connectivity - PMC ), to memory loss precipitating identity loss (Psychogenic amnesia and self-identity: a multimodal functional investigation - PubMed), to narrative changes leading to self-concept changes – demonstrating that they are not mere philosophical abstractions but scientifically pertinent models.

Evaluating these three models side by side provides a structured research program for personal identity. Each model offers potentially testable claims and illuminates a different level of analysis, but the evidence reviewed here does not establish a sufficient or integrated theory. Future work can test how biological continuity constrains psychological continuity, how psychological processes support narrative construction, and whether narrative interventions produce identity-relevant changes measured independently of self-description. The synthesis should therefore be read as a comparison of candidate models and revision conditions, not as proof that identity has been reduced to three exhaustive components.
